Epilepsy
is the commonest serious neurological illness. One in
every 100 people will have a seizure during their lifetime.
Epilepsy
is due to a short circuit in normal brain activity.
The type of epilepsy depends on the parts of the brain
affected.
Only
10% of all epilepsy is explained by genetic factors
alone. Other important causes include brain infection,
brain injury, brain scarring during early development
etc. and can all be prevented through better public
health measures.
Over
90% of people with epilepsy can achieve full control
over seizures with medication. Several new medicines
are now available. The choice of medicine is dependant
on the type of epilepsy the person suffers from. Epilepsy
is curable!
Epilepsy
does not affect intelligence or smartness in most people
who are affected. People with epilepsy, often hold responsible
positions and are assets to society.
People
with epilepsy can get married, have children and lead
normal lives with their family. Epilepsy is no longer
a ground for divorce in India!
Epilepsy
is not a communicable disease! Yet it is a highly stigmatized
condition and people with epilepsy are denied opportunities
every day. Let us create equal opportunities for people
with epilepsy.
People
with epilepsy are not allowed to drive as per Indian
law. However, they can take part in most other forms
of activity.
People
with epilepsy may due to their suffering experience
emotional problems. Many of these problems can be overcome
with better understanding and support from friends and
family. Epilepsy is a brain disease and not a mental
illness.
New
treatments including surgery and brain stimulation offer
much hope for the person with epilepsy
